Daily Prayers in Lent

We pray to the Lord for courage to give up other things

and to give ourselves to him this Lent.

Give your Church the courage

to give up her preoccupation with herself

and to give more time to your mission in the world.

[We pray for …]

May the blood and water flowing from the side of Jesus

bring forgiveness to your people

and help us to face the cost of proclaiming salvation.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give your world the courage

to give up war, bitterness and hatred,

and to seek peace.

[We pray for…]

May the shoulders of the risen Jesus,

once scourged by soldiers,

bear the burden of political and military conflict in our world.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage to give up quarrels, strife and jealousy

in our families, neighbourhoods and communities.

[We pray for …]

May the presence of the risen Jesus,

his body once broken and now made whole,

bring peace and direction as we live with one another.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage

to give up our selfishness as we live for others,

and to give time, care and comfort to the sick.

[We pray for …]

May the wounded hands of Jesus bring his healing touch,

and the light of his presence fill their rooms.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer.

Give us the courage to give up our fear of death

and to rejoice with those who have died in faith.

[Especially we hold … in our minds.]

May the feet of the risen Lord Jesus, once nailed to the cross,

walk alongside the dying and bereaved in their agony,

and walk with us and all your Church

through death to the gate of glory.

Lord, meet us in the silence,

give us strength and hear our prayer,

here and in eternity. Amen.

Letter from the Interim Minister

Dear Friends

As we wait to hear if the lockdown will be extended beyond the 31st March there are three things that I need to bring to your attention.

Afternoon of Prayer Saturday 27th March

It was originally the Bishop’s intention to hold a day of prayer on this date in preparation for Holy Week and to consider the way forward for the Diocese. As we will still be in lockdown this will now be an afternoon on Zoom of Prayer, Study, Meditation, Discussion, and Reflection, in preparation for Holy Week and for our future.  The Zoom link will be provided in our next notice sheet.  I know that the Bishop would like as many people as possible to join in with this afternoon and I would encourage you to do so.

Essential Works – Sanctuary

Significant cracks and bulging have appeared in the plaster work in the area behind the communion rail. We have been advised by our architect that the repairs should be carried out sooner rather than later.  The damage does not appear to be structural but rather the effects of the plaster drying out. The Standing Committee have agreed that the work can begin during lockdown and we are currently awaiting final permission from the Archdeacon who is checking the specifications for the job.  The organ will be properly protected but will still be playable. If the work extends beyond lockdown it is our intention to hold our services in the body of the church, although we will have access to our organ and we are likely to need volunteers for cleaning parties to prepare for Sunday services.

If we can start the work during lockdown please note that NO ONE other than the contractors, will be allowed access to the church building under any circumstances. The contractors will be operating in line with Covid regulations. It will mean that during lockdown we will not be able to carry out funeral services in the church building, although graveside services will still be possible.

Easter Services

If we are still under restrictions after 31st March, I will stream a short service of reflection and meditation on both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday as well as Holy Communion on Easter Sunday from the Rectory.  Further details to follow next week.

God’s blessings, Alessandra
